The ecologically unpolluted Kvarner area is the basis for a rich variety of food and specific type of diet: The coastal cuisine, owning to its Mediterranean and maritime influences is based on fish, sea-food, cephalopods, on lamb, pasta, Mediterranean vegetables and fruit, herbs, olives and olive oil, sheep cheese and wine, as well as on strong drinks – home made brandies.
Besides the contrast between coastal and highland cuisine, there are differences in food preparation among single microregions. Each island, even each village, prepares food in its own way. The autochthonous white wine «Vrbnička žlahtina» from the island of Krk matches ideally with traditional Kvarner dishes.
